Oratorasaurus: female-on-male violence is not harmless...

oratorasaurus:

spiritual-euphoria:

feminismisahatemovement:

The first time my ex-wife hit me when she was mad was a slap. Instantly she was mortified. I reassured her that I wasn’t hurt and that things had just gotten out of hand and we could talk things through.

The second time was with a box full of tissues while I was driving. I yelled at her to stop before we crashed and died, then pulled over and we talked about it for a minute. She was so embarrassed about it, and I told her I wasn’t hurt from the box but from the dangerous distraction.

The next time she punched me in the arm, and I laughed it off since I wasn’t harmed, and she punched me in the face, not even busting my lip open. She started going to therapy after this, blaming her violent outbursts on her family history (her family was seriously dysfunctional, coming to blows during arguments all during her childhood).

During this whole time, I never once struck her or threatened her. The end results of these events were her feeling deeply ashamed and getting so depressed I worried about self-harm. So, I did my duty as her husband and would comfort her, telling her I wasn’t hurt, that we had worked out whatever the cause of the arguments were, and basically going “no harm, no foul”.

The next violent outburst had her throw a heavy plate at my head when I looked away when she was screaming at me about a wrong food order I had picked up from Taco Bell. I was furious that she had made such a serious attack at me, yelled some, took her food outside, threw it on the ground, and told her that she could eat outside like an animal or go hungry. And she did go hungry that night. I told her that being violent against me was unacceptable and that she would not be under my roof if that happened again.

She told me she was so scared of how angry I got that she thought I was going to seriously harm her. After that, since I had laid a clear limit (and she believed I would back it up), she swapped to other methods to strike at me, but at least that mode of attack was closed.

The attitude that physical violence from women against men is harmless fed directly into her escalation of violence. She continuously upped the force used until she found something that would harm me. If I had responded by either leaving her or treating the first physical incident as a serious thing and not something harmless, none of the escalation would have happened.

When she first slapped me, she expected me to hit her back. Doing so would have established a clear boundary of reciprocation, which was what her family did during arguments, and it generally keeps things from escalating past yelling (and encourages passive aggressive backstabbing behavior instead of direct aggression).

Slapping her back would have kept it from escalating, but I’ve spent my whole life marinating in the idea that you never ever hit a woman. That idea bleeds over sharply into never hurting their feelings either, since what sort of man makes his SO cry?

Now, knowing what I know, I should have left her after communicating my anger and hurt. You can’t fix a person with Borderline Personality Disorder with sheer patience and love, but knowing there are real consequences to behaviors helps control their behaviors and maybe would have helped her in her next relationship.

For my current relationship, we had a talk fairly early own about our confrontation styles and how seriously I took physical violence. She’s a fantastic woman who communicates like a healthy adult, and if she ever struck me, I would most likely give her one more chance after making sure she realized how serious it was to me.

I honestly can’t believe how much of an idiot I am for ever hitting Nick. I have hit him before and I will never ever do it again.

Good. Violence is not the answer. Seek help if you need it. And thank you for not laughing off violence against men.

I am not sure how I feel about this, because men can be considered virgins, but historically speaking society was obsessed with women’s virginity and not men’s.
What are your thoughts tumblr

it’s asinine attempt to shift sex negativity from women to men instead of destroying it.which is Not Cool.
Also: virginity was not ‘invented by men’. but that’s a matter of history.

But historically speaking Men’s virginity was not as obsessed over as women’s virginity.
I will acknowledge it doesn’t differentiate between men today and the male run patriarchal society of the past ( I know, I dropped the “p” word again. But I feel like most reasonable people would acknowledge, even if the patriarchal society doesn’t exist today it was prominent throughout history in a majority of cultures.)

actually it was, but you can revise the anti-masturbation craze and all related bits to control male sexuality out of history if you repeat it often enough. And for serious reals, look up the Social Purity Alliance, and who all was pushing sex negativity in the Victorian era.kinda like how people call FGM ‘patriarchal’ to imply men are doing it when it’s mother and aunts actually doing the cutting. hell, that’s how the p word is used to begin with, to imply male responsibility for all of culture.
